Be prepared to hear some pretty exotic, if not wealthy, stories about all the host families I'm about to meet.
In doing some research on Germany, its culture, politics, and economics, I've found that the standard German family lives in apartment complexes, not houses with 4-stall garages and yards, like us with the American dream.
Therefore, the families with the spare bedroom, and money to feed an extra mouth for a good chunk of time, turn out to be the wealthy ones.
My SWE girl Connie did this identical trip last year, and ended up staying in a 1.2 million-dollar house.
Another one of my engineering buddies went on the trip with her, and stayed with a family that owned and operated their own entire private vineyard. She said you could open the back door to their house, and set foot on rolling hills of grape trees. Wow.
Dan, one of the boys traveling with me this year, has a younger sister that recently studied abroad in Germany, and ended up having a host father that was a member of the Chancellor of Germany's cabinet. Sheyah, the friggin CHANCELLOR of GERMANY came over to her host home for supper one night, like it was no big deal or anything.
Alas, I am highly intrigued to hear back from my host family and get to know them.
Fish, or no fish.
